Stories from Operas
Formerly part of the Nature/Art/Music series. Will eventually be part of the Appreciation Series, expected Fall 2022.
"We go to opera...to hear music and see beautiful scenic effect ... Music is first of all something to be felt." Acquiring a taste for opera begins in childhood and here are a collection of stories of operas that will appeal to children and young people like Hansel and Gretel and the Magic Flute. Knowing the story isn't completely necessary to enjoying opera as it's the music that conveys the meaning, but it can help. In fact, the story of the Magic Flute is a little bizarre, but children usually enjoy much of the music. On the other hand, the music of Wagner's operas may be beyond a child's reach, but this retelling of the stories that inspired him are so beautiful, I think every child should hear them. You may recognize the inspiration behind Tolkien's Lord of the Rings as well. You can find wonderful performances of many of the operas included in this volume for free on YouTube.
