Stories of Hymns
Formerly part of the Nature/Art/Music Series. Will eventually be added to the Appreciation series, expected Fall 2022.
When I was first mapping out the volumes in each of the series, I hadn't intended on devoting an entire volume to hymns. I love hymns, but I didn't have the depth of appreciation that I now have. Hymns combine the power of poetry, image and music with a heavy dose of pure inspiration. In fact, as you read the stories behind our most beloved hymns, you'll soon see that their writers didn't labor over the words. They would just find the words suddenly flowing through them and they would hurry and write them down. Like the fairy tales, many of our hymns are gifts that have survived and traveled through the centuries. l think nothing makes the veil thinner between heaven and earth than hymns. Here are the stories behind many of the world's favorites, used among congregations of many different denominations. You will also find stories of how hymns changed lives and provided comfort or direction. Much of the book will only appeal to an older student as it goes into the history of the hymns, but you will find stories throughout the text that you can easily adapt and retell your children as you attach them to specific hymns. Teaching our children hymns by heart will give them a great refuge from the storms.
